The County Democratic Convention will be held Saturday May 9 at 3 p.m in the county courtroom. Delegates were elected from precinct conventions held May 2, with Precinct 7 passing a resolution pledging support to government officers and the constitution.
Funeral services were held in Wellington for Myron Messer a 54 year old retired Air Force Warrant Officer who participated in America's first peacetime atomic test on Kwajalein Island He served 22 years earning the Air Force Commendation Medal and was named Outstanding Airman He was born in Memphis and lived in Richardson prior to his death at Presbyterian Hospital Dallas on May 2 1964. He married Cleo Brisbin in Yuma Arizona in 1941.
Collingsworth County voters chose a new county district clerk and re elected County Judge Zack Thomas in the Democratic primary. Carmen Lindley won 923 votes to 686 for Lorene Jenkins, while Thomas defeated Jack Lackey 890 to 712.
Quail school announces eighth grade honor roll led by valedictorian Sheri White with 96.25 and salutatorian Doris Peters at 95.5. Seniors J D Atkerson and Susan Finely Crowder set to graduate Friday May 22 along with the eighth grade class roster including Hubert Baker James Davis Lonnie Green Fannie Harris Larry McCann Teresa Patterson Doris Peters Clifton Sullivan and Sheri White.
The Collingsworth 4-H Club field crops team won District 1 on Saturday May 2 at Canyon and will compete at the State 4-H Roundup in College Station June 3 to 5. Team members include Ricky Nall and Mike Davis under County Agent Don Reeves. Additional teams—Electric team Danny Watts and Denny Carter. livestock team Keith Davis Allen Havens Keith Martin—also competed with results pending. Junior Quarter Horse team placed fourth with Teresa Patterson Paul Hanna Jim Bob Nall and Bart Patterson.
Quail Chapter FFA dairy products judging team placed third at Texas A&M, out of 79 Texas teams. Members Mark White Julian Torrez and Darrell Feemster with alternate Tommy oatman coached by Doyle Messer. White sixth and Torrez eighth high individuals. Hedley and Cooper School noted in results. Janie Cummings of Austin and two other top UT students are named 1970 Scholastic Achievement Award recipients of 100 each by Recordings for the Blind. She will travel to Washington May 15 to accept the honor from Mrs. Richard Nixon at the White House. she graduates May 30 with a Bachelor of Music and plans graduate study toward a Master of Music in piano pedagogy.
Collingsworth County Republicans reported nine votes cast in the May 2 primary with all races showing unanimous tallies. County chairman David Baumgardner noted results for candidates including Bob Price and Tom Christian with several 8 and 9 vote counts. precinct chairman Mrs. Frank Anderson received two votes.
A. A. McQueary announces Dickie Johnson and Connie Lewis as top 8th graders of Wellington, with Johnson holding a 96.16 average and Lewis 95.87. They will join 12 other high ranking classmates in the May 28 graduation program.
Thayne Amonett the elementary school principal announced the pre school summer readiness program enrollment date is Thursday May 14 at the elementary school from 4 00 to 6 00 p m Parents must bring the child s birth certificate Attendance requires eligibility to start school in September.
People of the Collingsworth area will gather Friday night May 8 for the Hospit al Week Gala in Ellison Park. The event features western food a flea market art auction music and games all proceeds benefit St Josephs Hospital. Final plans announced by Bobo Castleberry general chairman working with St Josephs Hospital Auxiliary.
Susan Sorrells, a Texas Tech University piano student from Dallas, will perform in Wellington on Sunday May 10 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church as part of National Music Week hosted by the Wellington Federated Music Club. Proceeds fund hospital improvements. reception to follow. She has appeared in Wellington before with Carol Blain and has studied under Louis Catougno and Alfred Mouledous.
