Burn ban changes in Collingsworth County

Collingsworth County remains under a burn ban until the commissioner's court lifts it. On April 10 the court allowed outside cooking on purpose built covered grills on nonflammable surfaces, with wind under 15 mph, water available at the grill, and extinguishing the grill when finished.

Early voting runs May 19 2006 from 8 to 4 at the Wellington Elementary north entry office. Election day May 13 at Burn Handley Community Building from 7 to 7. Voters may cast three votes for Michael Souder Richard Sims Craig Needham Jo Ann Johnson Tina Patterson and Dale Dunlap. Hospital board and city council elections canceled for lack of opposition.

Cemetery clean-up cancelled by Wellington association

Rain last weekend caused the Wellington Cemetery Association to cancel the planned clean-up day scheduled for Saturday May 6 2006. The event and its timing were halted due to unavoidable weather conditions.

Communities rally for county fire departments in April benefit

Residents of Collingsworth County contributed to emergency teams with a total of 12513 dollars raised at a Sunday April 23 2006 benefit meal at Burn Handley Community Building catered by Cattle Call of Amarillo. Local firms donated including Wellington State Bank Community Bank Warrick's Inc Wellington Tractor Parts Owens Fuel and Farmers Co op. Greenbelt Electric gave large per department sums.

AEP Texas to transfer Texas Panhandle customers to SWEPCO

AEP Texas North Company and SWEPCO plus MESPP filed with the PUCT to shift about 7,000 retail customers in Childress, Collingsworth, Donley, Hall, and Wheeler counties to SWEPCO. The change aligns with SPP grid operations and aims for lower, bundled service. SWEPCO expects four months to implement after regulatory approval.

Walking for Kids promotes awareness in four cities

In May, hundreds join the 1st annual Walking for Kids to aid abused and neglected children. CASA of the Rolling Plains funds volunteer training. Registration runs 7:30 to 8:30 AM on Saturday May 13, 2006. Fees are 10 dollars for walk only or 20 dollars for walk plus t shirt. The 9 to 11 AM route starts at a local site. Wellington High student named DAR Good Citizen for 2005 06

Senior Payton Kane, son of Theresa and Steve Kane, is chosen as the 2005 2006 DAR Good Citizen from Wellington High School. Kane is a four year Student Council member, National Honor Society, UIL One Act winner, 4-H tutor, and active in community groups with vocal awards and an interest in county history. He plans to attend Texas A&M University.
