Collingsworth County remains under a fire ban effective December 12, 2005, until lifted by the Commissioners Court. Local officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and monitor updates from county government for changes.
WPW urges community to donate teddy bears, new or gently used. Donated bears will be given to the local Police and Fire Department to help comfort children involved in accidents and emergencies.
The Palo Duro Cutting Horse Association will hold a cutting event March 4 and 5 at the Wellington Fairgrounds. Come out and cheer on your favorite rider.
The WAC will offer aerobics classes on Tuesday and Thursday from 5 30 to 6 30 pm. Non members pay 16 dollars while members pay 8 dollars. For questions call 447 0110.
Farmer's Coop Gin and the Collingsworth Chamber of Commerce held a February ribbon cutting for the new gin completed in 2005. Construction began April 2005 on the 150 by 60 foot building. A ceremonial $4,340,000 check was presented, with USDA Rural Development and CoBank backing the project. The old gin built in 1965 could not meet rising cotton volumes, ending the season with 59,627 bales in 2005.
Collingsworth County faces reduced federal support for its Home Delivered Meal Program which serves over 1,100 meals monthly to elderly and home bound residents. Director Juda Nation warns that without local contributions, more than fifty people will go without daily meals and volunteer visits each week.
