Indictments Returned by Grand Jury in Collingsworth County
Four indictments were returned by a 100th District Court Grand Jury in session Monday February 27. Presid ing Judge Robert Montgomery heard three guilty pleas with probated sentences. Indictments against Brenda Kay Freeman for forgery and passing and Westley Johnson for burglary of a building arose from events in 1982 and arrests in Hall County.

Wellington Public Schools plan Open House during Texas Public School Week from March 5 to 9 with a main event Tuesday March 6. The high school auditorium hosts the UIL One Act Play Dino, about a youth recently released from prison, followed by student exhibits and a National Honor Society Academic Fair in the high school foyer.

Day wins Scouting's Silver Beaver in Pampa banquet
Vernon Day, Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troops 431 and 430, received the Silver Beaver at the Adobe Walls Council annual recognition banquet in Pampa on Feb 25. The award honors distinguished service to youth. Day leads Troop 430 Wellington, the council’s only handicapped boys troop, and has guided several units since joining Scouting in 1973.

The Wellington Volunteer Fire Department, among Collingsworth County's oldest, marks a near 60th birthday while members advance training under Chief Danny Gray. They train year round, log state certification hours, and attend Texas A&M and Canyon courses to meet a 75 percent certification goal, impacting the city’s fire insurance rates. The department, aided by five instructors from Texas A&M, operates seven Scott airpacks and runs high level drills including LP gas fires and house-blaze simulations.
