A Missouri paper warns against widespread selling of “ancient” candlesticks and other relics to tourists as pioneer antiques. It notes vast quantities marketed and a man paying 1400 dollars for a walnut stamp to craft “antique furniture” for Missouri pioneers, echoing famed conmen and Stevenson inkstand lore.

Gates and Barbed Wire Change Texas Cattle Market
After the Civil War Texas cattle prices dropped while beef commanded 25 to 40 cents in the East. Hardware salesman John W Gates introduced barbed wire in 1871 in San Antonio, proving its fencing value by corraling twenty five wild Longhorns. Barbed wire spurred rapid fence expansion, overgrazing, and a rise in rustling as open-range days waned.
