Sterile Male Release Begins Boll Weevil Control on High Plains
The High Plains started the world’s first large scale field test of boll weevil control by sterile male release on June 4 with about 45 000 sterilized weevils released on 9 acres at Bill Glenn farm Dickens County. A second release followed June 7 and a biweekly schedule is planned. The test aims to prove a principle to reduce weevils without chemicals, using radiation sterilization and a new method combining chemo sterilants. The project, led by Dr. Ted David of USDA, builds on a nine-county diapause program that reduced weevil numbers by about 99 percent.
