An Omaha jobbing house presses a small Iowa town merchant for payment after a shipment is rejected. The tale reveals letters to a railroad agent bank president and city mayor asking for a lawyer. The mayor replies in a terse, satirical note claiming sole bar in town and church pastor duties.
New York boasted Ellen Elizabeth Benson the brightest high school graduate, noting her early feats at eight months and reading at age three. Despite a 19 year old mental capacity, she declares she dislikes studying and is lazy about house work, warning that precocious youth may fade without effort.
The article notes that minor, ordinary events often steer life toward major outcomes, with examples from Disraeli whose school fight altered his path and Napoleon whose fate changed by a muddy battlefield after rain. It suggests lucky breaks and deliberate effort jointly shape success or failure.
The article traces ice cream origins from sixteenth century Italy to France, England, Germany, and America with highlights like the 1786 New York ad and 1851 Baltimore pioneer Jacob Fussell. It notes a rapid rise toward a major industry nearing 350 million gallons and praises dairy health benefits while poking fun at public figures and farming quips.
The article tours Washington-on-the-Brazos Texas noting monuments and historical sites including the National Monument built by Washington County schoolchildren in 1899, a replica of the convention building, Independence burial plots tied to the Houston family, and the Independence Baptist Church established in 1839 with service attendance details. It links historic landmarks to the Pentecost theme and Bible lessons for June 9.
A collage of brief oddities spans crime, court, and peculiar incidents. Robbers posed as undertaker aides robbed J C Stelwyn in Glencoe Iowa of jewelry valued at $10 000 after a funeral. A peppery mix of fines and silliness follows from Chicago to Dover Ohio and Denver.
Reports include Carroll Eugene Shamann injuring his tongue at a sanitarium, a dead man found near Highway 16 but moved before officers arrived, and a stray incident of repeated unconsciousness. County abstractors face workload increases, a large oil lease sale impact noted, and a boy survives a horse rope incident.
