Heavy Grazing Reduces Water Absorption in Plains Soils
A Texas Agricultural Extension Service report shows heavily grazed Southern Great Plains range has water intake 2.27 inches per hour versus 3.64 and 4.41 inches for moderate and light grazing respectively. Soil compaction from grazing reduces moisture absorption on loamy sands, with short sod-forming grasses replacing taller species. Research at Bargains in the Classified Acts field station in Woodward Oklahoma in cooperation with Oklahoma State notes grazing intensity alters soil structure but not organic matter or nitrogen.
