Dickie Johnson says the purchase aims at eventual use as repairs begin with roof leaks and damaged adjoining offices being cleaned out. The project enhances the square’s improving look.
Masonic Lodge 763 in Wellington will install new officers on Saturday July 23 at 8 p.m. Dick Pendleton is Master, Bill Lindsey senior warden, Michael Breedlove junior warden, with Kirby Campbell as installing officer and Eddie Orr as installing marshals. Wellington city council report for 1993 94 shows a 139000 surplus. City Manager Jon Sessions cites REA loan program visits and notes ball park lighting projects costing 14700.69 split with the school district and banks, plus a 3395 scoreboard upgrade funded by Community Bank and Wellington State Bank.
Collingsworth County peanut crop looks outstanding despite reduced acreage and hot weather. Mike Sawyer of Quail Peanuts says dryland crop is thriving with timely moisture. Prices steady at last year’s level or higher, storage peanuts plentiful. Georgia floods could reduce national acreage by 10 percent if 130000 to 150000 acres are lost. Irrigated county crops help mitigate heat and drought, suggesting an excellent year ahead.
As of press time no further details were available on the federal lawsuit against Collingsworth County and several entities and individuals. Sheriff Dale Tarver and County Judge Zack Thomas had not received personal notification. The Leader will report any progress as it becomes known.
A men s community prayer gathering is scheduled for 6 a m on Monday July 25 at Burn Handly Community Center. Non denominational in purpose the event aims to boost community unity says Dale Williams associate pastor of Abundant Life Church with Billy Neeley reporting.

Second largest town in Collingsworth County comes alive each summer as Panfork Baptist Encampment expands from its Wellington origins. Since 1946 the camp has grown into a year round facility serving northern and eastern Texas Panhandle churches, with 60 acre campus, cabins, dining hall, tabernacle, and Lutie Chapel. Camps run May through July for boys and girls grades 3-6, coed 7-12, and day programs for grades 1-3, plus Special Friends Camp for mentally challenged youth organized by Ridgecrest Baptist Church of Greenville. Camp attendance ranges 60-250, with Senior Adult Day averaging 285. The Morlans’ Panfork view anchors the camp’s administration and kitchen operation each season.
