Quail Mercantile Era Roots in Early 20th Century Commerce
The Quail community saw its first store in 1904 started by W M Barton and Kinard, later sold to M L Boss who became Wellington constable, then to Dr Ed Beck, then to Mart Barton. Two stores consolidated then closed. In 1913 John Richard Self and wife Laura moved from Arkansas and ran a prosperous mercantile, later sold to Tom Crabtree in 1919. Self opened a new store, Crabtree then renamed Quail Mercantile after buying stockholders out. The business offered clothing, shoes, notions, canned goods, tools, farm equipment, produce, caskets, and tractors, with Mrs. Crabtree making grave clothes. Crabtree followed a “buy farmer’s surplus, sell him what he needs” approach, selling on time during harvest downturns. In 1935 Crabtree started bank night drawing with customers.
