At the January 12 meeting Collingsworth Chamber of Commerce installed 1976 officers including Henry Wells as president and Lyman Daniel as first vice president. New directors are Mrs Bill Hall Bob Bell and Dr Mark Fires.

Dodson Girl Drowns In Well Near Mangum Oklahoma

Regina Sue Green a Dodson girl nearly three years old drowned after falling into an old hand dug well about a mile north and one east of Mangum Oklahoma Her body recovered at 1240 a m Monday after more than 11 hours missing with 250 people helping in the search The well about 60 feet deep contained 30 feet of water and she was found at the bottom visiting her maternal grandparents and parents.

Boverie Home Destroyed by Fire in Wellington

Fire in bitter cold destroyed the Boverie house, a Wellington landmark built in the early 1900s by C Boverie. Mrs A C Boverie suffered burns and remained hospitalized after flames spread from an open bedroom heater.

Assets of Wellington's two banks rise to $25.63 million with deposits at $23.62 million as of December 31 1975. The year shows a $4 million asset gain and more than $8.5 million increase in deposits from three years prior.

Approval Granted for FM Road 3134 Construction in Collingsworth

Administrative approval for FM Road 3134 in Collingsworth County has been granted. The project extends 6.2 miles from the Donley County line to Dozier and McLean, linking with existing sections. Wellington volunteers re elected their slate of officers during the annual meeting and dinner. Bob Watson began a third term as president Marshall Peters was named vice president and Margaret Vines returned as secretary. Dr Louis Finney praised the group and outlined Panhandle Emergency Medical System goals for improving access to care and emergency response.

County Livestock Show Opens Season in Collingsworth

Collingsworth County youths enter the annual youth livestock show on Saturday January 17 at 1 00 pm at the Livestock Show barn and arena on Amarillo Street between 7th and 8th If weather cancels the event it moves to the Soil Conservation Service barn Don Reeves the extension agent says 15 to 20 steers expected with seven boys and 15 calves entered Mark Fourmentin fields two Angus steers an Angus Hereford cross and a polled Hereford and has already won a grand champion at the Amarillo Livestock Show.

Skyrockets Tie for Top Place in District 2A Play

Wellington defeated Wheeler Mustange 52 to 37 on Tuesday January 13 to share first place at the midpoint of District 2 A. Edward Thomas led with 22 points while Wheeler’s Jim Verden scored 17 as Wellington pulled away in the third quarter. Memphis fell to Clarendon Bronchos by 10, knocking the Cyclones from contention for a three way tie.

Wellington School Enrollment Up 80

Wellington schools report 777 students, about 80 more than last year, with 13 new entrants since Christmas break from Texas New Mexico and Oklahoma. Most new students remain, prompting the addition of a first grade teacher. Enrollment in May was 690.

County nominates candidates for Outstanding Citizen honor

Five residents are nominated for the county Outstanding Citizen award. A selections committee of the chamber will review the names and choose one recipient from the nominees for final recognition.

Services for Bessie Winters Set in First Baptist Church

Funeral services for Mrs. Bessie Winters will be at 10 00 a.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Collins officiating. Burial will be in Palrview Cemetery. She died Tuesday January 13 in Wellington. Winters and her late husband W E Winters were longtime residents of Indian Creek Community and active in education and religion before retiring from farming in Wellington. Born Bessie Keesee in Protem Missouri on June 20 1909, she was the daughter of Jobe and Louisa Randall Keesee. The family moved to Granite Greer County Indian Territory before statehood and later to MGA.
