A pep rally for the Rocket basketball team is set for Friday at 12 55 p m in the high school gym with an early dismissal at 1 15 p m WISD students. The first playoff game is Friday night at Canyon High School against the New Decal Lions at 6 30 p m with tickets 2 for students and 4 for adults.
Evangelist Terry Roediger leads a family focused revival at Dodson Church of the Nazarene February 24 through 28. Roediger, founder of Hope for the Family, will speak daily with a basket dinner after Sunday services and every family receives a Ten Commandments copy.
The Women's Center at Harrington Cancer Center and Baptist/St. Anthony's will run a mobile breast cancer screening at Collingsworth General Hospital on March 18, 1999. The $75 fee covers a mammogram and self-exam instruction by a nurse, with funds from the Texas Department of Health available for qualifying residents. appointments only.
A meeting for parents of eighth graders will be held in the high school auditorium on Monday March 1 at 6 p.m. The session covers graduation requirements plans and block scheduling with emphasis on parental involvement to help students plan their academic future and qualify for a high school diploma.
Filing begins Feb 15 for City and School elections and Feb 16 for Hospital posts with finals on Mar 17. Incumbents Sam McGill, Robert Wayne Powell seek re election to City Council. Jim Cabbell and Jerry Lewis up for 3 year terms on WISD board. Wellington ISD office hours and spring break dates noted. hospital board to elect three two year terms in May.
The Samnorwood Independent School District schedules the board election for May 1, 1999 in the school gymnasium foyer starting at 7 a.m. Filing deadlines are March 17 for ballot places and March 22 for write-in candidates. Early in-person voting runs April 14 to 27.
In Wellington on February 22 1999 Judge David McCoy led four cases on seven charges with Randall Sims as district attorney. Garland Tyson got 10 years in TDCJ ID and a $2000 fine for burglary of habitation and 10 years for attempted burglary with a $2000 fine. Teddy Lange received 4 years for delivery of a controlled substance and $1500 fine with $140 restitution. 18 months State Jail plus $200 73 restitution for forgery. Justin Colwell took three years deferred adjudication with $670 restitution and $780 fine for theft of a firearm. Brian Longbine drew eight years for burglary and three years for aggravated assault with deadly weapon.
Wellington junior high and high school students competed at WTAMU Canyon on February 20. Eight high school and eight eighth graders earned top ratings, with eight advancing to state in San Marcos on May 29. Notable soloists include Judy Melton, Kristen Littrell, Brandie Tarpley, and many others. The percussion ensemble earned a division one rating, with eight members advancing.
