Lengthy Texas primary ballot faces Collingsworth voters

Collingsworth County voters face a long ballot in the Texas Democratic and Republican primaries and early voting Feb 19 to Mar 6 with March 10 election day. The slate includes presidential hopefuls, federal nominees, state judges, district attorneys, county offices, and party executive committee members. Community Emergency accounts opened to help future disaster victims

Collingsworth County Red Cross officials reopen emergency fund accounts at Wellington banks to establish a permanent year round Community Emergency Fund. The fund will assist disaster victims in the county with rapid support while donations from citizens, schools and civic groups continue.

August Festival Planned by Chamber of Commerce

Chamber of Commerce directors voted to sponsor a county wide festival in late August with broad participation. Tentative date set for Saturday August 22 as plans begin in a February 13 1992 meeting. Auto show proposed as a major festival component featuring new cars antiques and classics.

Wellington appoints Jon Sessions as new City Manager

Wellington City Council selected Jon Sessions of Amarillo as the new city manager to replace 18-year veteran Glen Taylor. Sessions, 31, has worked with Panhandle Regional Planning Commission since 1989 and led water system grant work, with duties including budgeting, environmental checks, and project closeout. He will assume duties before April 1 1992.

Marvin L Brown Home Fire Causes Extensive Loss

Volunteer firefighters battled a Wellington residence at 1108 Eleventh Street on Monday night February 17. The home of Marvin Lee Brown, his wife Lois Jean, and their two children suffered heavy interior damage mainly to the living room and bedrooms, with no injuries reported. Fire Chief Danny Gray said the cause was undetermined and Red Cross assistance was arranged.

Texas Supreme Court Finds SB 351 Unconstitutional

The Texas Supreme Court ruled Senate Bill 351 unconstitutional for two reasons: it created a statewide ad valorem tax via county education districts and required local authorization elections to fix it. The judgment is prospective, with the CED tax fund secure through June 1993, and taxpayers must continue paying 1991 and 1992 school taxes.

Wellington ISD extends administrators contracts in 1992 meeting

Wellington Independent School District board extended contracts for six administrators to June 30 1994 for Carl Taylor Barbara Williams Bob Turner James Williams Tommie Watts Wanda Cardwell and to June 30 1993 for Alcie Estes following Dr Collins recommendation. The board also set May 2 1992 for trustee elections and appointed election judges.
