Lubbock report notes that starting February 1, 1967, farmers using 500 or more man-days of hired agricultural labor in a calendar quarter must pay at least $1 per hour. Rates rise to $1.15 in 1968 and $1.30 in 1969 with records required to document hours, wages, and other deductions.
The text explains that Sweetie Pie week rules prevent averaging hours over weeks. Farm workers must earn at least one dollar per hour for each hour worked weekly. Year end bonuses cannot count toward the hourly minimum. Equal pay regulations require men and women doing the same work for the same employer under similar conditions to be paid equally.
The Shamrock Hilton Hotel in Houston hosts the 90th Annual Convention of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association from March 12 to 15. National speakers will discuss industry developments as registration opens March 12 and the opening session on March 13 is led by TSCRA President Ben H. Carpenter. Collingsworth County is usually represented at the meeting.
For the first time a Texas A&M experiment feeds castor meal to feedlot heifers to assess safety and performance. Superintendent Paul Marion reports gradual dosing from 0.4 to 3 pounds daily with ground sorghum and silage, noting a 2.1 pound daily gain despite low-quality cattle and the laxative castor oil. Castor meal costs about 55 dollars per ton, versus 88 dollars for cottonseed meal, with plans to extract more oil to lift crude protein toward 40 percent.
Texas Highway Department projects 6.7 million registrations in 1967 and urges owners to renew in February or March. Proper ownership documents such as title certificates and last year's receipts are required to obtain plates, with new plates to be displayed after midnight April 1. Confusion over required proofs noted in at least one county.
