A group of concerned parents met Wellington School Board on February 9 to press for cleaner elementary school conditions and textbook selection details. Supt. Clement said roof replacement is priority and TEA evaluation next year may require a remodeling plan to avoid condemnation. He noted taxes are at the city’s legal limit.
La Paisana Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host the Collingsworth County Student Awards Tea on Sunday February 15 at 2 30 p m in Burn Handley Community Center Clubroom. Winners include David Null Sharon Childers and Karen Lee with Miss Rita Lowrie presenting.
The Chamber of Commerce banquet will be held Thursday February 26 with Reagan V. Brown as speaker. Brown, aide to Governor Dolph Briscoe, has ties to Texas A&M Extension Service and is noted for community improvement work. Tickets cost 5.00 and are available at local banks, the chamber office, or from officers.
The Col lingsworth County Historical Commission and Bicentennial Committee present Man & Land & Love on Friday February 20 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets: reserved 3.00 general 2.00 student 1.00. Food booths open 6:30 with sandwiches coffee pop and cake in the auditorium foyer.
Suppers sponsored by the Dodson Civic Club will be held Friday February 20 at the American Legion building in Dodson. Serving hours are 5 00 to 7 30 p.m. Tickets are sold by club members per president Mrs Murray Dodson.
Governor Dolph Briscoe approved a 14,249 grant to Collingsworth County for a five county district attorney aide project in the 100th Judicial District. The funding comes from the Criminal Justice Division to cover partial salaries benefits and equipment for an investigator and a secretary in the district attorney’s office held by Guy Sell and Monty Ferguson. Counties include Garson Childress Donjay Hall and Collingeworth. The grant part of a 8.7 million package for Texas juvenile and criminal justice system improvements statewide.
Wellington Skyrockets clinched District 2 A by beating McLean Tigers on Tuesday February 10 securing a perfect second half 7 0 and 6 1 first half. They will face the District 1 A winner around February 23 or 24 with Amarillo viewed as a probable site.
The 80th District Court Grand Jury in a special session February 6 indicted seven people in burglary cases in the Pampa-Borger area. James Kirk Douglas Morris Lyon Powell David Ladd Debra Beene were charged in the Pruden Drug burglary. Brett Pauls and Tommy Gibbons faced burglary charges for a pickup theft tied to Bill Lindsey. Beatrice Archie was indicted in the shooting death of Tol Kilgore. All suspects were in custody or out on bond.
February 19 designated as Appreciation Day to honor Dr. Chas. B. Jones for 51 years in medicine largely in Wellington. A 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. coffee at Burn Handley Community Center will welcome Dr. and Mrs. Jones and their five children hope to attend. Co-ordinated by Mrs. John Wolf with doctors and Panhandle colleagues invited. Dr. Jones not retiring from practice. Born December 19, 1898 near Wellington. educated locally. University of Texas in 1919. Baylor Medical 1925. post graduate work at Mayo Clinic Barnes Hospital St Louis Chicago Eye Ear Nose and Throat Hospital. Army Medical Corps lieutenant. married Kathleen Patricia December 31, 1928.
The Wellington School Board reelects administrators and coaches in a February meeting. Superintendent E W Clement’s contract extends to 1980 with no raise after declining higher pay. Melvin Cardwell’s principal contract extends to 1979 with a 300 dollar travel allowance increase. James William’s head coach contract also extended for a year in appreciation of his service.
A group of Wellington parents will mail letters to the State Textbook Committee in Austin protesting explicit language cruelty and ethnic slurs in textbooks. A meeting at 10:00 a.m. on February 18 in the Heritage Room will organize attendees to draft letters, each bringing pen and paper to support the effort.
Bob Goforth becomes the first to seek a city council seat by filing on February 5. He aims for a second term after a special election appointment earlier this term following Garner Alcom's resignation. Terms for Wayne Cudd and Earl Bartlett expire this year, with no second-term filings yet.
Samnorwood Lions Club will hold its annual sale at Samnerwood School starting 10:00 a.m. on February 28. Items may include farm equipment antiques trucks and furniture. Joy Knoll sale director and Jimmy Breeding Lions president coordinate consignments. lunch will be served at noon.
