Commissioners select Wellington Bank as county depository
County commissioners meet February 9 selecting Wellington State Bank as the county depository with 14 percent interest. OK Tire Shop bid to repair flats at 3.50 to 17, the only bid. A contract with Panhandle Alcoholic Recovery Center Amarillo was approved for 1981. Travel plans for three officials to College Station and A M University were approved. Road administrator Merle Parker reported on the golf course road and right of way efforts.

A two vehicle crash 0.5 mile west of Haskell Street on a county dirt road Friday February 6 sent one man to hospital and led to his passenger Benjamin Taylor of Burkburnett being jailed on a Wichita County probation warrant. Clarence Benton 59 of El Paso Street faced pending charges.

Wellington School Board Extends Three Principals’ Contracts
The Wellington School Board extended contracts for elementary principal Melvin Cardwell and junior high principal Bob Allen through the 82 83 school year and awarded high school principal Eddie Hawkins a similar term. Hawkins’ travel pay rises $50 monthly. Allen’s increases $40. The board called a trustee election for April 4 for three seats. Absentee voting runs March 16 31. David Johnson was hired to teach social studies to fill Don Beck’s vacancy. The board approved allowing law enforcement to carry weapons on school grounds after hours in certain duties. A 1973 Ford Courier pickup owned by Jay Jones was found wrecked near Wellington Industries at 12:10 a.m. Sunday February 8, about 90 minutes after it was reported missing. Sheriff Kenneth Maxwell said a juvenile was later picked up as the driver. neither he nor his passenger were injured.
