Merle Haggard to Headline May 9 Benefit in Wellington

Country legend Merle Haggard will perform May 9 at the Wellington football field with his band. Proceeds go to the Satellite Center, a sheltered workshop in Collingsworth County. Tickets are 10 for adults, 5 for children 10 and under. 12 at the gate. Gates open with a pre-show by local bands at 6:30 p.m. Concessions will be run by Satellite Center.

It's Still Slow In Cotton Fields In Collingsworth County

Cotton ginning remains slow at four gins in Collingsworth County. By 3 p.m. Tuesday February 3, only 19,656 bales had been weighed, about half the 1986 figures.

Dodson Completes Refurbished Water System

Dodson residents now use a refurbished water system completed in late 1985 and accepted by the Texas Department of Health in December. Ober J. Engineering of Wellington supervised the project with Carter Drilling cleaning wells and a new chlorination setup installed.

Three Candidates File in City Elections

Three candidates filed this week for spots in the April 4 city election, bringing the field to four. Milburn Derryberry, mayor pro tem and council member, announced for mayor after Mayor Owens said he will not seek re election. Lorene Jenkins filed for mayor and Robert Wayne Powell for council, joining Sam McGill who seeks re election to the council. The deadline is February 18 at 5 p.m. for ballot placement. three council incumbents holding terms include Willie Grayson Lyndon Crelia and Gary Brewer.

Spike Plant and Arrowhead Roll Up to 53 Workers

Wellington Industries and Arrowhead Products have rehired to 53 employees after an August to December 1986 shutdown. The firms, dating to 1977 and run by Dwain and Brenda Marple since 1980, produced a $24 000 payroll for the 53 workers last week. The spike plant operates six eight hour shifts daily with two of three machines active. The companies’ Cleveland area representative pursues rail contracts with major railroad offices nationwide.

Library Receives Two $1,000 Gifts From Ex-Residents

Two former Collingsworth County residents each donated $1,000 to the Collingsworth Library Building Fund this week, lifting the cash total to over $338,000. Winifred Small Jones of Houston gave $1,000 in memory of her late uncle Fred Holmes of Shamrock, daughter of the late Clint and Zoe O'Neil, who moved from the area to Amarillo. Joan Jones Coleman of Dumas added another $1,000. she grew up in the Quail community and was the first donor to the fund when the Collingsworth County Endowment began, making several contributions since.

Valentine Picture Deadline Friday

Deadline for Grandparents Valentine children photos extended to Friday February 6. Eligible ages range from one day to six years and pictures will be returned. Each photo will be placed in a heart with the child’s name and parents, plus a brief sketch with ages and grandparent names. Cost is 8 dollars per child.

Youthful Booster Recalls 1914 Ozark Trail Rally

G D Milner, once of Dodson and Wellington, replies to Marshall Peters recalling the Ozark Trail Association that ran from Oklahoma City to Amarillo and beyond, noting the old Ozark Trail marker near Wellington now lies in a ravine on private property. Milner, 13 at the time, belonged to the Ozark Trail and favored the southern route through Hollis and Dodson.
