Downtown Loop 204 ADA upgrades discussed by City Council

Wellington city council met December 19 to review ADA compliance work on Loop 204 east of the square with proposed ramp relocations by the Texas Department of Transportation. They approved Nov. 21 minutes and $20,709.75 in bills, joined tax suits with nearby districts, issued mobile home permits, funded CPR mannequins, and reported the city operating in the black.

Soil Conservation Service renamed to Natural Resources Conservation Service

The United States Department of Agriculture reorganizes the Soil Conservation Service into the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Chief Paul Johnson says the new name reflects broader duties while preserving private lands program delivery, including Wetlands Reserve and Water Bank programs. Powell notes no major local changes yet in Collingsworth County as programs transition.

Collingsworth County Sheriff Reports Five December Arrests

The Collingsworth County Sheriff's Department lists five arrests from December 14 to 20. On December 14 a Wheeler County suspect faced probation violation with a $150 fine, and another male was charged with minor in possession with a $165 fine. On December 16 three males were arrested for failure to appear. fines were $67, $120 after a JP reduction, and one released after a JP agreement. Christmas services note two events: bilingual vigil at Our Mother of Mercy at 9:30 P.M. and candlelight communion at First Christian at 6:00 P.M.

Doctor Gains First Care Provider Status in Wellington

First Care of Amarillo approves Dr. Manuel Jason of Collingsworth Family Clinic as a care provider for insurees in Wellington. Dr. Dennis Villareal is slated for approval soon per Hospital Administrator Travis Roderick. Dr. Jason began seeing FirstCare patients on December 14 with formal approval anticipated early in 1995.

Wellington ISD Amends Calendar For New Year Break

The Wellington Independent School District cancels classes on Monday January 2 1995 due to New Year’s Day Sunday. Schools were dismissed December 16 for holidays and will resume Tuesday January 3 1995 to align with government closures and family schedules.

Virginia Robey announces Collingsworth County Churches From Settlement till Now is available in time for the holidays. The Wellington Leader printed the book, with Rita Lowrie and Ruth Derryberry leading the committee. Copies are limited and can be obtained via the Museum or by calling Rita Lowrie at 447-2897.

Wellington School Board hires new assistant band director

Wellington Independent School District Board met December 15 to approve the 1993-94 audit by Brown, Graham and Company. After closed session, Scott Strobel was hired as assistant band director. Dr. Gano Wilson will retire end of term. Leslie Birkey will teach his classes. Budget amendments and bills approved before adjournment.
