The Wellington Leader staff extend a cordial invitation to a holiday open house on Friday from 11 30 a.m. to 2 p.m. to express gratitude for customer loyalty and support during the year.
The Women's Center of the Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center and High Plains Baptist Health Systems will run a breast and pap smear cancer screening clinic on Thursday December 28 1995 at Collingsworth General Hospital 1014 15th Street Wellington by a mammography technician. The program is FDA certified with breast exams and one on one breast self examination instruction by a registered nurse. A mammogram will be provided. Continued on Page 2.
Librarian Vicki Decker announced the Collingsworth Public Library will close from December 23 to January 1. Staff extend holiday wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
The Texas Department of Public Safety urges all Texas motorists to drive with extra caution during the holiday period. Last year 26 deaths occurred in the 78 hour Christmas window, including seven pedestrians and 13 vehicle occupants not wearing seat belts or involved with alcohol. Take rest breaks every two hours, plan routes, and buckle up. do not drink and drive as troopers remain on duty to keep travelers safe and ensure a Merry Christmas.
The Wellington Independent School District Board met December 18 1995 in regular session approving the 1994-95 audit by Brown Graham Co. Unanimous consent also approved library board appointments Anne Long and Joe Baumgardner, renewed law firm Ray Wood and Fine for property value appeals, and moved the January 1996 meeting to January 15. Financials were reviewed and bills paid before adjournment at 9 17 P.M.
The office of U S Representative William Mac Thornberry announces his filing for re election in Texas 13th District. Thornberry Clarendon native rancher and attorney aims a second term on fiscal restraint and a balanced budget plan.
Judge Earl Janes was certified at the 20 Hour Justice of the Peace Seminar held December 10 13 1995 in Tyler. Sponsored by the Texas Justice Court Training Center based at Southwest Texas State University San Marcos the seminar forms part of five sessions for elected Justices of the Peace to meet Continuing Judicial Education Requirements under Article 27.005 of the Texas Government Code.
The First United Methodist Church invites families and individuals to attend Christmas Eve Communion on December 24 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The altar will be prepared and worshippers may come and go as they receive the Sacrament in this brief service.
Four arrests were made from December 13 to December 19. A woman on December 13 for theft posted a $2000 bond and was released. December 14 saw a woman charged with forgery and drug paraphernalia. she paid a $60 fine and was released, while $5000 bond remains for forgery. A man arrested December 14 for burglary vehicle failed to pay fines. $130 fine and remains jailed to serve. December 17 a woman paid a $60 fine for marijuana possession conviction and was released.
Childress attorney and farmer Earl Griffin filed for District Attorney in the 100th Judicial District, which includes Carson Childress Collingsworth Donley and Hall counties. He will challenge incumbent Randall Sims of Wellington, who was elected in 1994. Griffin says he has been a trial attorney since 1978 and will vigorously pursue prosecution.
