Santa Claus Builds Wooden Toys and Community Ties
In 1975 John Forbis began making toys for friends’ children, expanding into a local tradition. By 1978 he handed out 800 toys to trick or treaters and since 1979 Santa and his elves have produced about 14,000 wooden cars whistles trucks and reindeer. The toys carry a lifetime warranty and replacements are free if damaged lost or stolen. Forbis, a retired Wellington district judge and former resident, greets visitors Fridays and Saturdays at 1000 Hill Crest Drive in Childress. A Christmas blood drive hosted by Coffee Memorial Blood Center on December 20, 2004 from 2 to 7 pm at the WAC offers a Christmas ornament to donors.
