Jeff Wilson to Head C-C in 1968

Jeff Wilson president of City State Bank and longtime civic leader will head the Collingsworth County Chamber of Commerce in 1968. He was elected December 4 and will take office January 1968, succeeding Wayne Cudd. Alvin Horton will be the new vice president, with Billy Moseley returning as treasurer. Three new directors were elected: Robert Lewis John Coleman and Denver Powell. Holdovers include C T Hubbard Bill Hatch Jack Sanford George Shadid Jimmie Kelso Eddie Slay J I Morgan.

Montgomery Enters Race for District Attorney

Memphis attorney Robert E. Montgomery, 36, announced his candidacy for District Attorney of the 100th Judicial District covering Carson, Childress, Collingsworth, Donley and Hall Counties. A Baylor Law School alumnus and former editor of the Baylor Law Review, he has served as special county judge in Midland and Swisher Counties and held a prior law partnership in Midland and Tulsa.

Mrs. J. F. Yopp Dies After Long Illness at 74

Mrs. J. F. Yopp 74 died 9:50 a.m. Sunday in a Wichita Falls hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Kelso Chapel with Rev. Leroy Gaston officiating. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery. pallbearers named. Born December 18, 1892 in Quitman Arkansas she lived in Collingsworth County and Wellington. Survived by husband of Wellington and one grandson B. W. Weatherby of Irving. son Charley Marshall Weatherby preceded in death.

Toy and Clothes Pick-up Set for Sunday

A town wide toy and clothes drive is planned for Sunday December 10 starting at 2 p m to help Wellington needy children at Christmas. The event is sponsored by the Wellington Future Farmers Rotary Club and joined by the Wellington Jaycees.

The Wellington Kiwanis Club will install 1968 officers at the annual banquet Thursday December 8. Dodson Janes 73, lifelong Collingsworth County resident, died at his home on 907 Childress Street at 10 30 a m Tuesday December 5. Wellington High to Perform All Regional Band Concert

Seventeen Wellington High School musicians won chairs in the All Regional Band and will perform at West Texas State University auditorium on Saturday at 7 30 p m. Band director James Larson announced the ensemble rehearses Friday and Saturday morning with instrument clinics Saturday afternoon led by clinician Don Baird from West Texas State. This marks the largest Wellington tally in the event.

Baptist Youth M Night at Norwood Held

The North Fork Association of Baptist Churches held its annual Baptist Training Union M night on Monday December 4 at Sumnerwood. Rev. Keith McCormick of First Baptist Wheeler gave the message and a film strip show on advanced church training accompanied the program. About 115 people attended, noted Rev. Leroy Gaston of Wellington, marking one of the better attended meetings in some time.

Durfey Dies at 86. Longtime Buck Creek Resident Remembered

Mrs. W. D. Durfey former Minnie Love Campbell aged 86 died in St. Josephs Hospital after a long illness. She helped settle Buck Creek later known as Loco in Childress County with the Campbell family in 1889 and her marriage to Mr. Durfey in 1908. She attended Goodnight and Clarendon Colleges and taught music while supporting her childrens education across Wellington Clayton and Harlingen before moving permanently to Wellington in 1961. She and her husband were charter members of Bethel Methodist Church and she served as the community musician for both Baptist and Methodist services.

Area Children to Greet Santa Claus Saturday

Hundreds of Wellington area children will greet the real Santa Claus Saturday December 9 on the court house square. He arrives at 3 p.m. and passes out candy. The Collingsworth Chamber of Commerce sponsors the visit and the Good Will Trades Day Drawing follows at 4 p.m.

The Sumnerwood FFA senior conducting team will compete in the state parliamentary contest in Huntsville on Saturday December 9 following a first place finish in Area I leadership at Plainview on December 2. Greenbelt District FFA Banquet Slated For December

Greenbelt District Future Farmers of America hosts its annual banquet Monday December 11 at 7 30 p.m. in the elementary school cafeteria with 12 area schools represented. Walter Labay Plainview adviser will speak on agriculture for the youths. Contests include FFA Sweetheart and district talent, with banners awarded to Greenbelt district winners from the November 11 contest. The massed Wellington bands will perform their annual Christmas concert on Sunday December 17 at 2 p m in the new high school auditorium. Participants include the High School Junior High and Elementary School Bands with the 30 piece elementary band making its public debut.

Santa Claus plans to enter town on Wellington’s new fire truck. Mayor John Coleman pledged the vehicle will be ready and firemen agree it’s the best use for the big truck. Children should expect Santa’s greeting from the apparatus this year. Reindeer will wait outside town.

Jack Gibson Dies in Shamrock After Ill Health

Jack D. Gibson, 67, died at his Shamrock home on Thursday November 30 after years of ill health. A Wellington businessman from 1922 he moved to Shamrock in 1954 and served as Pontiac Buick dealer. Born July 26 1900 in Little Rock Ark he later moved to Ft Worth before settling in Wellington. He married Eddie Wells in 1924, she died in 1953, later he married Ruby Adams of Shamrock in 1854. He was a Kiwanis member and church steward.
