Santa Claus Letters sought for Wellington Leader edition

The Wellington Leader invites Collingsworth area children and former residents to send letters to Santa Claus for publication in the Christmas edition on December 22, 1994. Letters should be mailed or delivered by December 8. A Santa mailbox will be on the front counter for in person drop offs.

Extension Program Council meeting set for December 6

The annual Extension Program Council meeting will convene at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday December 6 at the Burn Handley Community Center. Farmers recognized for result demonstrations will be listed, with extension activity highlights and a talk by Norman L. Carpenter of Falcon Industries about a new Lone Star Knitting plant in Wellington. RSVP to the County Extension office by December 5 at 806 447-2313.

Pick an angel and share the joys of Christmas

Saunna Blacksher announces the Christmas Blessing Fund for Collingsworth County. Angels for children are available at West Texas Utilities Wellington offices Greenbelt Electric Co-Op Community Bank and Wellington State Bank. Select an angel fill in the form return gifts by December 19 for 150 needy children.

Christmas Tree Lighting Set For December 5 In Wellington

The annual Wellington Christmas tree lighting returns on Monday December 5 at 6 p.m. on the courthouse square. Sponsored by Collingsworth Chamber of Commerce the event features a manger scene live animals from local farms music led by Jamie and Mary Johnson and community carols. Afterward attendees move to the Sullivan Building museum for a second tree lighting with Santa, popcorn, and museum displays including a restored back bar from Goat's Cafe.

Collingsworth County Agriculture Earns Hefty 1994 Income

County Extension Agent Dale Dunlap reports 1994 gross agricultural income for Collingsworth County at about 36.682 million dollars with cotton surpassing cattle for first time due to drought and prices. Cotton covered 53,814 acres yielding 32,000 to 33,000 bales, irrigated crops faring better.

New Justice of Peace Janes Ready for Office

Earl Janes will be sworn in as Justice of the Peace in Collingsworth County on January 2 to replace A. J. Fires. He plans state training after the date and aims for a low key, fair, people centered court. Janes joins County Judge elect Jim Forrester as a new county official.

County Judge Zook Thomas to be honored for humane services

County Judge Zook Thomas will be honored for more than 24 years of service to needy Texans at a 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. reception on December 7 1994 in Wellington. Hosts include TDHS regional office Lubbock the local TDHS office Texas Health Department Region 01 and local officials. Thomas held multiple civic posts and received honors such as Conservationist of the Year 1967 and Outstanding Farmer 1966 from regional groups.

Two Arrests Reported by Collingsworth County Sheriff

The Collingsworth County Sheriff's Department reported two arrests from November 22 to 28. On November 22 a male was arrested and charged with assault, posted a 1500 bond, and was released. On November 23 a male was charged with disorderly conduct and released on a 500 bond.

City council approves mobile home permit and street closure

Wellington city council met Monday November 21 approving the minutes and bills totaling 17059.58. A mobile home permit was issued to R L Encinia at 1401 Corsicana Street. The council also approved closing 6th Street between Belton and Corsicana Streets and an alley across blocks 210 and 211 for a new Wellington business. A Christmas party was set for December 8 and bids were invited for a city office computer and a new backhoe with specifications at the city office. City Manager Jon Sessions reviewed the new fiscal statement.
