Peaches benefit from irrigation at Montague Texas A&M station
Texas growers see higher yields and incomes from irrigated peach trees at the Montague station. Horticulturist Randolph reports irrigated trees yielded 1.6 to 2 bushels more per tree and 87 percent of fruit surpassed 24 inches in diameter, with 32 percent over 2 1/2 inches. Water comes from a 60-gallon-a-minute well through a 4 inch sprinkler system. Average income per irrigated acre was 642 dollars versus 274 dollars for non irrigated, at an estimated cost of about 100 dollars per acre per year. Texas markets all peaches locally, contrasting with California’s share in major cities.
