Straw Bridge Across Red River Recalled in 1894 Testimony
In 1891 a Red River flood widened the stream to eight miles. C F Doan testified in 1894 Vernon Texas that a straw bridge, built by Mr. McAllister with red soil and straw, aided crossing but caused erosion and depth concerns. Locals debated how the bridge altered stream flow and fence maintenance near Deans Store north of Vernon.

The county bread show will be held Thursday August 31 2000 at 5 30 p m in the County Courthouse conference room. 4 H members must bake a pan of cinnamon rolls and pre register by contacting Saunna at the county extension office 806 447a4. Placings will be awarded in Clover Kids Juniors Intermediates and Seniors age groups. The public is invited to attend and the winner advances to the Tri State Fair on September 16 2000.
