Restrictions Off Sugar Beets in '65
LLEGE STATION The TLS Department of Agriculture removed sugar beet restrictions this year and announced none for the 1966 crop. It also raised 1968 domestic sugar requirements from 800,000 tons to 10,400,000 tons. USDA said 1900 beet plantings would not be restricted. Beet sugar production must exceed marketings enough to keep safe stock levels before any restrictions are reimposed. The 1963 beet quota was 2,091,127 short tons, underscoring the need for extra beet stocks to meet future opportunities.

VA to Operate 2000 Veterans Nursing Home Beds
The President authorized the Veterans Administration to activate and operate facilities to care for 2000 nursing home type veteran patients. VA administrator John S. Gleason Jr. and regional office manager Robert W. Sisson of Lubbock confirmed the plan, adding it supplements 126,000 hospital beds. The move aims to relieve strain on VA acute programs from aging veterans who now constitute about one third of hospital admissions and require long term care. The memo notes nearly 1,000,000 veterans are 70 or older, a number expected to rise by 60 percent by 1946.
