Wellington Spring Clean-Up Underway City Beautification Effort

The Wellington Fire Department joins Mrs. Ernest Harwell to lead a week long spring clean up April 20 to 25. Fire crews burn vacant lots after work hours in teams of four while the city trash service covers collect duties daily. Residents are urged to tidy premises and improve town appearance as part of the Collingsworth Builders Club coordinated effort.

21 Charter Members Honored At Legion 45th Anniversary

The Frank King Post 249 marked 45 years of the American Legion by honoring 21 charter members and past commanders on Thursday night April 16. Ernest Lewis and Polly O Neil attended. six past commanders were present including James Sullivan and Eli Wolf. A candlelight ceremony, birthday cake, and awards closed the event, with readings and songs by local groups.

Reports say Kerry Don McDaniel was released by the St. Louis Cardinals as the last of the Arnett McDaniel brothers to join the NL club. Lindy McDaniel was traded to the Chicago Cubs where he stars as a relief pitcher. Von McDaniel, in the Houston organization, seeks a new chance as an infielder after a brief pitching stint with the Oklahoma City 89ers with limited success.

Quail Future Farmers held their annual livestock show on Friday April 17 with 27 animals entered. Grand champion beef female was a heifer shown by Rodney Hill. reserve champion was a cow belonging to Duane Campbell. Royce Mitchell won grand champion female dog and Johnny Carson the reserve. Judges were Jake Tarter. Winners include Gilts under and over 6 months, pigs by Rodney Hill Royce Mitchell Jerry Haralson Mike Mitchell Ronnie Baker Johnny Carson Tommy Needham Smokey Mitchell Stanley Gosnell. Barrows led by Paul Gollighugh with Robert second and third.

Dairy heifers winner is Tom Needham. Cash prizes listed as 2 dollars for first 1 dollar for second and 50 cents for third. Also notes friendship motto adopted by Texas Legislature in February 1930.
