Severe Kansas storms bring floods and tornadoes across the state
Heavy rains and tornado funnels lashed Kansas causing flash floods in north central areas. Tornado sightings reported near Abilene El Dorado south of Concordia Minden and north of Manhattan in Pottawatomie County. Wellington area saw scattered thundershowers and cooler conditions by late night. Tuesday forecast calls for generally fair and cooler weather with low near 70 and high 85 to 90.

U S Senator Edward M Kennedy remains hospitalized after a Friday night plane crash. Doctors say his condition is extremely satisfactory and he is bright and alert. He faces six to eight months of recuperation with possible surgery for three fractured vertebrae. Birch Bayh and his wife also hospitalised with less serious injuries. Kennedy cannot be moved for 10 to 12 days.

Lupton Dies at 85 After Life in Real Estate and Cherokee Strip Chuck Wagon Service
William C. Lupton, 85, of 718 West Harvey, died Saturday evening in a local hospital after a month’s stay. Born October 8, 1878 in Hillsboro Ohio, he moved to Wellington area, worked in real estate, and previously drove a chuck wagon at the Cherokee Strip opening. He was a member of the First Methodist Church Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. Survivors include three sons a daughter a brother a sister four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Services Tuesday at Frank Funeral Home with burial in Green Castle Cemetery. Graveside Masonic service by C. B. Robertson.

Tornadoes, Floods Strike Kansas and Missouri Across Weekend
Floods and powerful storms spread through Northeastern Kansas and Northwestern Missouri. A 200 mile line of storms spawned at least five tornadoes in Kansas with hail and heavy rain. The Abilene area and Frankfort saw flood levels and road damage while Missouri reports include Maryville hail and a tornado near Skidmore. Rescue crews saved several people trapped by rising waters and debris.
