U S Marines artillery and aircraft hunted North Vietnamese forces all day near Khe Sanh. The U S Command said 128 enemy were killed with 11 Marines dead and 30 wounded. A second battle nearby left 219 enemy and 16 Marines dead.
Andrew James Gray announced he will seek the Democratic nomination for the state Senate in Kansas. He will file for position No. 2 in the 13th District of Shawnee and Wabaunsee counties. He is the first Democrat to announce for this office. Two Republicans have filed. Gray's wife served as U.S. treasurer and Kansas Democratic national committeewoman from 1936 to 1964.
Deputy election official Melva Cox announces city hall registration books remain open during regular hours and outlines new rules allowing 21 by election day to register and vote at the August primary. Primary books close July 16 and residents who moved must re register. Sumner County 4-H Fair books are being mailed to about 250 families. fair dates are August 7 and 8. Boys State participants will report tonight at the American Legion in Wellington after a Legion dinner and 22 attendees will present. Tax deadline for the last half 1967 taxes is tomorrow with $163,916.07 total collected yesterday, including over $109,000 from Santa Fe Railroad payments. Don Vaughn of the telephone company reports plans to move the business office from the project to a new location.
Mrs. Rose Bucher, wife of Cmdr. Lloyd Bucher, says the Pueblo crew of 82 remains in North Korean custody and blames the slow diplomatic push. She criticizes the Defense Department for not releasing crew lists, saying she has reached about three quarters of families and offers encouragement amid the standoff.
James H. DeCoursey of Mission and Roland Preboth of Wichita filed Tuesday for Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor. Other Democrats in the race include George Hart of Wichita and J. Donald Coffin of Council Grove. Republican candidates include Rep. John J. Conard, Sen. Charles Arthur, and John O. Stewart. Westover withdraws from governor race. Multiple filings for state Senate and House as well as for the State Board of Education noted. Continued to Page 2.
A brief tornado touched down in LaCrosse Kansas destroying two residences four mobile homes and four businesses. Mrs Norman Hammer and Mrs Roanald Wilson were taken to Rush County Hospital with minor injuries and shock while four others had lesser injuries. Sheriff Mendenhall reported two funnels touched the ground east of town moving east to west.
Death notices for Lloyd Bishop Lyda C Demuth and Audred Pearl McMillen appear on page 2 with brief details of their passing and survivors.
Thousands of black and white demonstrators gathered at the Washington Monument to pressure the government to fight poverty as police and guardsmen maintained security. The event echoed Dr. King’s 1963 I Have a Dream remarks, with Mrs. Coretta Scott King present and Abernathy urging nonviolence. Authorities deployed about 4,300 police and national guardsmen along the march route, with additional Army units on alert near the Capitol.
Congress considers a bill to ban mail order sales of rifles and shotguns after Judiciary Committee action and shifting positions among key senators including Dirksen Hruska Hart and Bayh amid post King assassination pressure. A Tuesday night line of storms produced tornado damage near La Crosse and other funnel activity in southwest Kansas.
A small plane struck a power line five miles west of Topeka and crashed into the Kansas River killing Kerry Tilton aged five and Don Falley 35 both of Topeka. Pilot James Ray Waddell Jr. 42 was hospitalized in fair condition. Waddell’s stepdaughter was among the victims. A Rock Island freight train stopped at the scene as lines fell on the tracks.
Army doctors report President Eisenhower, age 77, has newly experienced occasional irregularities of the heart beat during his fight against a recent heart attack. The bulletin says the condition, described as extra systoles, is responding satisfactorily to appropriate therapy and marks the first change in the medical updates issued from Walter Reed Army Hospital.
President Nguyen Van Thieu signed a general mobilization law on Armed Forces Day and stated Vietnam will not seek more U S or allied troops. The move adds about 125 000 soldiers to reach roughly 875 000 by year end and widens eligibility to 16 17 year olds and men 38 to 50 for local defense units. U S officials say equipment will be provided and Thieu plans to press for more arms during a Washington visit in July.
Gov. Robert Docking said Kansas officials will offer the Reagan staff any security needed for Ronald Reagan's Saturday Topeka visit. Reagan is to speak at a fundraiser barbecue sponsored by the Republican State Committee. Docking, a Democrat, will be away on prior commitments and will not meet Reagan.
Kansas AP. Sedgwick County Attorney Keith Sanborn, a Democrat, filed for re election to a sixth term after the Kansas Supreme Court ruled the four year term for the office unconstitutional due to a two year limit on county offices. Willis Wall, a Wichita Republican, also filed for the post this year.
