President Kennedy and Democratic leaders discussed civil rights and proposed vocational education and retraining for workers. The plan may join the civil rights package or become a separate bill, aimed at reducing unemployment among Negroes. Leaders note mixed reactions as talks continue with governors, educators, and lawyers.
In Harlem two street rallies ended in fighting as patrolmen moved in from four boroughs. Two officers were injured and 26 people were arrested after bricks bottles and stones were thrown at the crowds on 7th Avenue near 125th Street.
Weather across Kansas shows clearing skies after weekend showers in the southeast and a trace of rain at Dodge City. Expect a few showers in western Kansas late today but generally clear conditions with Monday’s highs around 73 and overnight lows near 53.

Survived by widow Lora of 825 East Ave A, two daughters Ruby Hundley Wellington and Rena Taylor Haven, a son R D Tipton Wellington, two sisters Carrie Walker Plattsville Colorado and Bernice Shirley Greely Colorado, three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were incomplete today.

Washington AP Senate Republicans divided over a leadership bid to remove private business desegregation from President Kennedy's civil rights program. Senator Barry Goldwater supported Everett Dirksen's plan to make integration a voluntary community matter, while Senator Clifford Case argued Congress can ban discrimination by public-facing businesses and must act. Dirksen asked the Republican Policy Committee to weigh the compromise.
Mrs. Katharine Lydia Kolarik of Caldwell died early today in Caldwell Hospital after weeks of illness. Born September 17, 1887 in Cleburne, she was married to Frank Kolarik in 1907. Survived by husband, two sons, three brothers, three sisters, and five grandchildren. Services set for 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Caldwell Presbyterian Church with burial in Caldwell Cemetery.
