Auto crash kills Wellington man in Denver
Stephen Lewis Bates 26, formerly of Wellington, died in a head on collision in Denver late Saturday night. He lived in Denver and worked as an electrician for Colorado Electric. Bates was born in Winfield Kansas and graduated from Wellington High School in 1964. He is survived by his parents a brother two grandparents and was preceded in death by his wife Linda in 1972. Burial will be in Winfield and services are pending.

West German Leader Faces Narrow Helicopter Crash at Masada

First Cut Made On Geubelle Farm Today
The 1973 Sumner County wheat harvest opened at the Alice Geubelle farm near Wellington. The first load from Geubelle moved Sunday to the Walcott-Lincoln elevator, moisture 14.6 percent, 63 pounds per bushel. The Kansas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service predicts about 37 bushels per acre on Geubelle’s 52 acre field.
