Kansas farmers begin winter wheat harvest amid market worry as expected yield nears a record high while prices hover around two dollars a bushel. Earl Hayes notes low enthusiasm despite healthy crop and large scale hauling from fields to elevators and lines of custom cutters.
Woodridge cites Wellington cash price at 1.95 a bushel and notes production costs per bushel range from 3 to 3.50. He says higher price supports are needed but warns Carter may veto a new farm bill pack.

A Canadian National ferry William Carson carrying 38 passengers and 90 crew abandoned lifeboats after a hole opened in the bow and the ship began taking water. The vessel sank about 1:45 a.m. near Square Island as investigators weigh possible causes, including ice pans or a collision.
Kansas farmers brace for a harvest hampered by low prices and tight storage space. Government loans backed by grain credit are backing much of the crop, risking on-the-ground spoilage and possible delays in rail movements as spiked moisture limits threaten quality. Weather offers little relief, with recent rains easing harvest but forecasts predicting dry spells to follow. Plans from Far-Mar-Co and others anticipate continued space pressure and adjusted moisture restrictions as the season progresses.
A 42-foot charter boat Dixie Lee II ventured onto Chesapeake Bay despite a thunderstorm warning and was toppled by a 10 to 13 foot wave. At least four died and nine were missing. 14 others were rescued as search efforts continued in rough 5 foot waves.
A Timber Lane Courts trailer house at the Belle Plaine y on U S 81 north of Wellington burned early this morning. Loss estimated at 10000 dollars. Sheriff’s office logged the call at 12 55 a m and investigated. Rural Belle Plaine fire department fought the blaze for hours. Owner Alfred Crawford was away. State fire marshal investigated and said arson possible. No injuries.
Wellington resident Mrs. Harry Dickensheets of the Thrift Mission Shop at 109 E Seventh St has aided Futures Unlimited with equipment and cash donations for the workshop’s Activity Fund. Director Jack Allen says the nonprofit offers employment for adult handicapped workers in Sumner County and sells products like hanging planters and cutting boards at 2712 N.A St.

Wellington area needs 10 combines and trucks 8 combine operators 7 truck drivers 6 elevator workers and 1 tractor driver. Kay Smith from Anthony-Harper County reports clear weather and soft to muddy fields. Anthony office needs 18 combines 18 trucks 2 combine operators and 5 truck drivers. The first carload of current crop hard winter wheat in Kansas City sold for 2.20 a bushel at the Board of Trade the lowest price since 1972. The shipment from Farmers Cooperative Association Baxter Springs was bought by Wolcott and Lincoln Inc. The test weight was 62.6 pounds and protein 11.1 percent with 15.4 percent moisture, a level traders fear for storage. Observers blamed the high moisture for the low bid.
The 1977 Kansas wheat crop is turning color ahead of average though most grain remains unripe. Nearly all acreage reached jointing, about 95 percent headed, 35 percent at turning stage. Hail damage noted, some wheat is down, moisture improved, weeds and pests present. Corn 95 percent planted, sorghum 45 percent. Continued to Page 2.
