James H. Meredith the first known Negro to attend the University of Mississippi was to return for the summer term as Cleve McDowell entered Ole Miss law school with police and soldiers on alert. Gov Barnett opposed both enrollments while federal courts ordered no interference. McDowell paid $179 in fees with a $500 check from the Utility Club Inc of New York City.
