Gov. William W. Scranton of Pennsylvania announced at a Harrisburg news conference that he would never run for president or any other public office. He called the decision irrevocable and dismissed speculation about 1968 or future campaigns. The Republican former nominee in 1964 said his term as governor ends next year.

Weaver sought 5 000 dollars in actual damages and 10 000 dollars in punitive damages. The suit named James Chrisman the principal but that claim was dismissed. Grace said paddling was a disciplinary tradition after warnings failed and described the paddle as 20 by 4 inches aimed at the pocket area.
Astronauts Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan prepare for a 70 hour flight including satellite rendezvous and a 24 hour space walk after delays. A fiberglass shroud on the target may prevent a space linkup but the mission remains active with satisfactory weather forecast for Friday.
