Memorial Day Weekend Draws Crowds to Wellington
The 60 hour Memorial Day holiday closed with many visitors from out of town for WHS class reunions and the Centennial High School Graduates Picnic at the National Guard Armory drawing about 800 attendees. Weather was warm with a Sunday rain and highs near 94. Memorial Day services at Prairie Lawn Cemetery were well attended under VFW leadership. Locals and visitors enjoyed picnics in Woods Park and Lake Wellington drew fishermen and boaters. 4H agents took five Sumner County youths to the Summer Round-Up at Kansas State University in Manhattan from June 1 to 4.

About 800 people gathered at Woods Park for the Centen nial All-School Picnic. Classes from Sumner County High School and Wellington High School ate fried chicken inside the Armory due to weather. The event featured a program with the Sweet Adelines, city greetings from Mayor Zoglman, and honors for longtime graduates including George Harbaugh and Adda McMillin family.

Audie Murphy among six dead in crash in Virginia
Wreckage of a chartered Aero Commander found on Brushy Mountain near Roanoke after Murphy and five others flew from Atlanta to Martinsville. Rescue in Istanbul Gun Battle Free’s 14 Year Old Girl
Police stormed the third floor apartment where two young terrorists held a 14 year old girl, Sibel Erkan, hostage. In a three minute exchange of heavy fire, one kidnapper was fatally wounded and the other gravely injured. The girl, uninjured but in shock, was carried to an army hospital.
