Notorious Bandit Fredericks Captured After Oakland Cashier Slaying
A San Francisco Savings Union branch on Market and Polk streets was robbed by an armed felon, later identified as Fredericks, an ex convict linked to Chris Evans' gang. A shootout left cashier William A. Herrick mortally wounded and bookkeeper Melville injuring the assailant. Fredericks fled, was chased, and finally surrendered after police tracked him to a vacant yard. He had two pistols, a belt of cartridges, a dirk, a razor, and dynamite fuse. Herrick, aged 46, died.
