Miners Entombed After Mine Fire at Old Abe

A mine fire at the Old Abe shaft in White Oaks New Mexico trapped eight miners 60 feet below ground as smoke and gases spread through the upper levels. Rescue teams reached the third level but could not advance until daylight. The entombed include Charles Sherrick W J Williams Jerry Canovay John Davis George Baxter White and W L Mitton. Williams and Sherrick are noted as experienced miners. The fire destroyed hoist machinery and shaft woodwork causing thousands in damage.
