A Huntington man was held up and resisted arrest after a shooting incident reported as a wounded man asking for help. Police pursued the suspect and secured the scene as investigators begin initial inquiries into motive and sequence of events.
Julius Hanson, a Georgia man claiming to be from Gornelia, says he was shot in the back two miles from town after a meeting on the railroad track. A jail escape suspect, he denies involvement, while a second man remains at large or dead after a gunfight with marshal Hannon near Huntington. Hanson agrees to return to Oregon for hospital care, pending extradition papers.
Mr and Mrs Frank L Mary of Omaha plan to move to Boise and establish an auto line to run between Boise and Thunder Mountain. Mary, formerly private secretary to Governor Poynter, has organized the venture and ordered the cars. Road access must be confirmed before operation commences near the gold camp.
Nettie Alexander, 19, daughter of Boise mayor M Alexander, died yesterday morning in Boise of heart failure. She was described as bright and handsome, and the loss will be hard on her father. Weiser store closed yesterday due to bereavement.
Market listings show hay alfalfa wheat oats barley potatoes beans onions dried prunes figs butter cheese ham bacon honey hens hogs mutton strawberries with varied prices. An unrelated paragraph denounces pollution and touts Dr King’s New Life Pills with a sales pitch and an offer of 250 units from Davis Dave Co.
A. B. Anderson and Sol Barnett purchased the Applegate placer claim near the Stacey ranch and plan development work. Tests showed coarse gold in paying quantities, with a tunnel planned into a promising hill to locate the placer source. The claim lies only three or four miles from the Weiser smelter, easing haul, with other filings by Lot L. Feltham, Stacey Bros, and Haye, Verbeck in the same area.
A Thursday meeting at O M Harvey's office organized plans for a Weiser July 4 celebration with track races and use of the old fair ground. A subscription committee led by Pont Moulton and F T Page will solicit funds. another meeting Monday will report progress and form event committees.
Ranchers plan alfalfa cutting starting Monday with crops estimated at two tons per acre throughout the valley. The harvest is earlier than usual, aligning with the theory that cutting at about ten percent bloom preserves leaves and improves palatability for feed.
Idaho rancher J M Snider plans to spend part of the summer hauling wood from the mountains. He will reduce his ranch chores to allow time for logging trips while earning pay for his effort and that of his team.
Two marriage notices dated June 1 and June 2 1902 record Wm A Childers marrying Amanda Babb in Cambridge at the Baptist church and Francis Marion Crowell marrying Nettie Clark at Meadows by local officials. James Mathess reports from Meadows Idaho on June 3 1902 that 80 horses and mules were buried in soft snow above Little Lake. After enduring 18 hours of snow drift he reached Borgdorf springs then War-8 Schaffere and Elk summit where trail work began. He notes rain hardened snow enabling 100 pack animals to pass yesterday and more today, keeping the Meadows trail as the only open route for horses. Feed for two nights is advised.
The narrative discusses traffic routes shortened by high water, noting many travelers pass through via Dixie, Boise, Ketebium and Salmon City to reach a common point in 16 hours. Sam Hartkopf struck artesian water in the Strayhorn pasture and wells show strong flow. The first well by Lim was 2 inches wide and 18 feet deep. H B Eastman of Boise, holder of the contract for carrying mail to Thunder Mountain, will seek an extension of the start date as Boise had no open road to the district. The issue centers on delaying work until a feasible route is available.
South Dakotans Wi Bamworth Fred Branch and Powell Grohs of Zels visit A Haberkorn in Crystal Bottom while seeking land purchases. they plan to buy before returning home.
Fred Brockman a horticulturist from San Francisco purchases 400 acres of raw land belonging to Peter Pence and adjoining August Brockman. He plans improvements for a home, potentially turning the property into an ideal Idaho ranch. Several prospectors and investors depart for Thunder Mountain and central Idaho gold districts. Ka York of Kangan City and J Staley of Cincinnati head for Big Creek ledge claims with gold returns, while M J Smith of Seattle and M Norman, among others, pursue outfits and Eldorado prospects. H L Hollister reports large ore deposits and Dewey mine potential, as others plan to establish new camps and secure wealth in the Idaho gold fields.
