Nephi Hardee of Leroy Utah visits Weiser to assess a vegetable canning factory. He plans an $8000 plant with 24 000 cans daily, funding part himself, to hire many workers and attract farmers and merchants to invest through stock and local purchases, boosting land sales and revenue for ranchers.
The board met at O M Harvey’s office to transact business. Bonds were ordered printed for transfer to purchasers. The clerk was instructed to have the engineer prepare plans for enlarging the ditch and to advertise for bids. The board intends to begin enlarging the ditch as soon as arrangements are made.
In Pendleton Oregon Chris Lemke a 30 year old farmer died by hanging after funeral services. His 31 year old brother Claus Lemke also died by hanging in an old house. Both families had comfortable homes and property valued at $15,000. The first death was linked to mental illness. the second had no apparent cause.
Charles DeGrundy and Theodore VanMeter, pioneer owners of three adjoining Thunder Mountain claims near Fairview, departed Wednesday for Chicago to discuss a proposition presented by H K Hollister. DeGrundy travels in place of VanMeter to handle negotiations and potential returns for hard labor in the district.
The P. and I. N. railroad updated its schedule with a northbound train at 8 30 a m and an arrival at 5 p m, shifting from the old times. A Kodak for Xmas is advertised with Churchill offering sales and lessons in the simple process.
J. B. Barrett Idaho immigration commissioner visited the city Saturday. He expects a large immigration to Idaho next year and has received many letters from wealthy and prominent men seeking information on the state and its resources.
In Baker City a complaint alleges ex sheriff A. H. Huntington is short in county accounts by about $17,000. Friends say the shortage stems from carelessness, not intentional fraud.
Frank Korup received an order from Boise for 300 dressed turkeys for Christmas trade. About 126 were shipped Thursday evening. the remainder will be shipped as soon as dressed. A local scarcity of fowls is reported near the capital city. Also lost items include a Winchester shotgun near Wagon Bridge and a gentleman's gold watch and chain with two rings, with a reward offered at the Signal office.
A Board of Trade meeting held Thursday at O. M. Harvey’s office drew good attendance. Harvey was elected secretary. Godfrey Sperling of Boise sent 75 toward the bridge fund and provided an American Bridge Co estimate of 34 000 for a full steel bridge with stone piers. The committee plans a five percent levy on city taxpayers to cover half the cost and will ask the legislature to appropriate the rest. Cigars by the box, reduced prices at Churchill's Drug Store.
Arthur W. Philips, student at Weiser Academy and son of Nelson G. Phillips, county commissioner-elect of Cambridge, suffered a severe accident when a Short Line train departed the depot. While jumping off after the car had pulled away, his foot was crushed by a passing wheel, risking loss of all toes on his right foot. doctors hope to save the foot, with treatment ongoing at Numbers’ office and a hotel room. Parents arrived to assist. Harvey Knowles advertises chili con carne and tamales, with baking powder promotions and local sales notes following.
Jack Davis, called Dismondfield Jack, received a pardon from the penitentiary on Wednesday ending a long legal battle. He had been convicted of killing John C. Wilson and Daniel C. Cummins in Gassia County on February 4, 1896 and faced four hanging sentences plus life imprisonment. The pardon was approved by Gov. Hunt and Secretary Bassett with dissent from Attorney General Martin.
At a Weiser meeting the company elected Lewis A. Hull presiding. P. P. Shelby was named vice president and general manager with George Pope as secretary. Henry B. Pierce and Louis Hall to assist as officers, directors include Geo. Cassel Alfred Koff and J. D. Audley Smith. A Chicago despatch says a New York meeting will decide future extension and construction timelines.

Dr Glaze of Weiser has been granted a state dentistry license after passing the board examination at a meeting held earlier this week.
Korup's market lists a selection of dressed turkeys chickens ducks and geese ready for oven placement. He has scoured the county to procure the finest fowls for customers and invites inspection of his stock to ensure satisfaction.
The Ladies of the Christian Church will hold their first annual sale in the Barton building next door to the Famous store. Cooked foods aprons cushions and other articles made by society will be offered. Coffee and doughnuts will also be served. Afternoon and Evening Tuesday December 23.

Lack and Schmidt of Baker City notify Mayor Kelly they are ready to take the water and electric light bonds now that the Supreme Court has established their validity. At the October 4 meeting bids for the water system construction were accepted: C White Baker City 38004 for materials and ditching iron pipe pumping plant and A G Long Portland 4446 for wood pipe. The council will meet Monday with contractor and engineer to start work and have materials procured and ready for immediate placement.
The council adjourned until Monday after a Thursday session. It directed the clerk to notify Lack & Schmidt of Baker City about Supreme Court bond decision and to seek formal bond acceptance, and to obtain lithographed bond samples and prices. The city attorney was to contact Oregon Short Line about land for a pumping plant and draft an ordinance amending No 18 to curb youths from jumping on moving trains with fines 5 to 50 dollars and under 21 age. Construction time for ops extended 30 days due to bad weather. Ordinance No 70 introduced for a uniform street grade.
The Signal postpones its Christmas issue due to missing lithographed covers and grants children a few extra days to send Santa letters. It notes girls show more interest than boys and announces a monthly 1903 prize to county pupils to gauge if girls have greater ambition and brains than boys.
Dec. 17 Mountainhome report of a decomposed male body found one mile south near A. G. Smith's ranch. A rail ticket from Cedar Rapids to Portland dated May 27, 1902 bore Karl Bittle’s signature. Money found includes 4.75 in silver and 10 in currency. a pocketbook printed Andrew Bittle contained 175. Coroner's jury investigated and linked the man to Andrew Bittle of Lisbon, Iowa, who disappeared after leaving a train at Granger Wyoming May 27 to look at land.
Dan Trewillinger from Snow Bride Creek in the Big Creek district arrived in Weiser to prospect and develop property. He describes enormous mineralized ore, large easily worked ledges, and high grade ore with much free milling material though some requires cyanide processing. He plans to stay several weeks more amid eight feet of snow on the Hik summit and a passable trail.
Government suit seeks timber value from a mineral location in Lewin and Clark forest reserve. Judge Knowles rules local or mineral claims may cut timber off reserve locations, a decisive decision with wide implications for Montana and other Rocky Mountain states.
A convoy of freighters departed Council about three weeks ago carrying supplies for C. L. Hathaway's camp at Grouse Creek. The journey was marked by heavy hardship and labor as they pushed through deep snow along the trail.
