Wisconsin's Territorial History and Early Speculation
Review of Moses M. Strong's History of the Territory from 1836 to 1848 notes the Legislature's purchase of 2000 copies, Strong's role as compiler, and the work's basis on Smith's earlier volumes. It details Wisconsin's early territorial organization, speculation boom, canals and railroads plans, early newspapers, schools, and the 1846 constitutional debates leading to statehood in 1848.

Wisconsin tobacco pioneers in Rock County 1851 crop
In Fulton near Lake Koshkonong, R Johnson and Dr Hall grew Wisconsin’s first substantial tobacco on shares in 1851. A frost ruined the crop, proving tobacco adapts to the state. Ralph Pomeroy later popularized field tobacco, transforming farms in Rock County and making tobacco common among area farmers.
