Two young animals found abandoned in the forest lived at the Ashantee king’s palace before one killed the other and the survivor, a panther named Sai, was gifted to Mr. Hutchinson. Tamed, he traveled with Hutchinson to Cape Coast, displaying affectionate behavior toward the governor, children, and even braving a cargo voyage. Though body and temper showed gentleness, he attacked when provoked or when witnessing monkeys or black porters. He became attached to his keeper, roamed freely, and even played at a window with townsfolk. After a long voyage, he suffered stress from captivity and fear of pigs and large monkeys, aided by care and medicine. Eventually he was sent to England, where he nearly perished during piracy but recovered, only to die soon after at Exeter Change, under the Duchess of York’s care, from lung inflammation. The panther Sai was treated as a sacred animal in its lands, guarded by fetishes and fines.
