Coins Found on Sand Near Sand Point Shipwreck
William Fisher found coins on the lake shore two miles north of the Sand harbor piers in Race Wisconsin totaling 70 cents including pennies and 5 and 10 cent pieces. A 1863 John Elkins penny and an 1878 Danish coin were among the haul. Officials suspect the coins belonged to a drowned sailor rather than Capt. Frank Lovell, lost in the Wetzel explosion, after relatives ruled out Lovell’s coins.
