Strange Battalion Letter From the Rio Grande
A letter from a pay department officer with the battalion recounts marching from a point near the Rio Grande about two hundred miles south of Santa Fe. It describes half rations, worn muskets, and the Sierra de Acha wilderness, with vivid scenes of privation, thirst, and the trudging soldiers toward San Barnardin amid a landscape of cattle rancho ruins and tense tribal interactions.
