A German impostor posing as a St Louis grocery agent visited Aurora merchants, traded a horse and buggy for a watch and cash, then sold the horse in town. Chicago telegraphs tracked the ruse. the thief fled toward Tettown on the next train as Wright Currie’s livery reported the missing horse.
A Greenfield Gazette report details the death of an eight year old girl at Deerfield near the river on a Saturday in late April. After a quarrel with her mother the child left with her six and a half year old brother and walked into the water seeking suicide. The brother restrained her briefly but she entered deeper water and drifted from sight as authorities later recovered the body the following day. The parents deem her insane and note only verbal correction was used.
In Resrix Texas on May 11 Captain Baylor moved into the upper reserve with fifty men and killed fifteen Indians. A chase by dragoons and Indians followed him, stoking broad excitement. Indians on the lower reserve fled their farms toward Capt. Ross Chenapment.
