Early Republican National Convention Opens in Chicago Wigwam
The Republican National Convention opened in Chicago at the Wigwam with a large crowd causing admittance issues. David Wilmot of Pennsylvania was named temporary president amid applause, and committees on credentials and platform were formed. Afternoon sessions featured permanent officers, a Lake excursion invitation, and discussions on resolutions including slavery in territories and tariffs. The day closed with adjournment to 10 o'clock next morning.
