Correspondent from Muscatine Iowa reports intense city excitement over a violent political incident. The Light Guards, once disbanded, were reassembled by a leading Democrat under a Union platform. Democrats and Bell-Everett supporters filled the armory, while Republicans and abolitionists were excluded. The event featured threats against Republican influence, with accusations of secessionist aims and intimidation of opponents.
On Friday morning near W P Smith’s bayou Cocorda plantation a panther leapt from the seed house area striking at a worker and dragging him to the ground. Armed men aided by a sentry gavel and axe repelled the beast after a fierce struggle ending with panther retreat and both workers driven back to the seed house. A large male panther had been slain the previous evening.
A public joke lands on P T Barnum when he visits a barber while in a rush. An Irish boy tricks the showman by posing as the barber and shaving him, then leaving a bill showing charges for shaving hair curling shampooing and bathing Irishman. Barnum pays, vows revenge, and pursues the culprit.
From Mt. Vernon News. A local account describes a night drive with a horse and sleigh in front of an office. Thunder and chaos erupt as the sleigh tips, the horse entangles in harness, and both lose control, the rider ending up on the ground after a half mile stumble.
The San Francisco papers report year statements with gold exports of 42,325,000 and produce exports of 8,732,000. The produce export rises 34 millions over before and reflects three years of growth. Steamer passengers totaled 30,000, departures 14,000, net 16,000 plus 60,900 overland travel.

The Charleston Custom House seized by South Carolina authorities with Palmetto flag costs the Federal Government $2,000,000 and needs an additional $500,000 to complete.
