Poetic meditation on childhood as a mortal birth blessed by heaven. A city crowd watched Professor Wise and his son launch a 36 foot diameter balloon shaped airship from a wicker basket. The craft rose smoothly, the American flag visible, as spectators cheered through a warm 82 degree afternoon. The barometer read 29.3, wind southwest, voyage expected to reach Lafayette Indiana.
In St Louis crowds gathered at Washington Square near Twelfth Street to watch Professor Wise and son launch the balloon Jupiter. By ten o'clock inflating work began as directors J. M. Brooks and George Brooks oversaw ballast and rigging. At eleven sharp the balloon rose about ten feet, the crowd swelling to three or four thousand as Wise addressed spectators and explained the flight was to show air currents northeastward as a potential balloon highway.
A lengthy 1859 dispatch details a duel near Tubec between Sylvester Mowry and Edward E. Cross over published disputes about Arizona. Cross used Burnside rifles at forty paces but a misfire stalled the duel. both men showed cool courage. The page also recaps prison escape attempts, court talk, editor moves, and a sweeping Iowa Democratic platform urging non intervention, territorial self government, tariff revenue, and anti Negro resettlement, with calls for electoral unity and reform.
The document expresses unwavering support for the 1856 Republican platform, condemns national debt and oppression, defends liberty of conscience and equal rights for citizens, opposes a slave code for territories, condemns slave trade, calls for federal enforcement of laws, and advocates free public lands for settlers while criticizing Homestead restrictions. It asserts loyalty to state officers and opposes nativity-based discrimination among citizens.
From the Picayune we learn on the 10th that a man woke to a supposed intruder in his room and fired his musket. He killed his wife while searching the bed area. A second incident notes a fire at Joliet’s Methodist Church kitchen after 4 PM Friday, worsened by a burst water line.
