At about three hundred twenty five feet a near inexhaustible supply exists, cheaper than surface water. Water near the surface could transform deserts into gardens and expand cultivation across western areas.
Judge Payson of Illinois travels to Washington to oppose transferring the Texas Pacific Railroad land grant to Southern Pacific. He gathers and analyzes Interior Department materials to block the transfer and reclaim lands for public domain as Congress prepares for winter action. J J Robbins arrested on the 18th for an alleged assault on an eleven year old girl in Modesto. He was taken to Stockton to escape a mob, then gave bonds at Modesto for 500 dollars and was released by telegraphic order from the Stanislaus County Sheriff. Public sentiment has shifted in Robbins favor. Robbins was an attorney in the Raulston estate. It is reported that his bondmen are the same who surrendered the defendant.
A San Francisco week of crowds saw no fatal accidents during parades or excursions by rail or water. About 1600 fires or catastrophes occurred of any kind, yet the week’s travel routes otherwise moved without major incident.

Despatches from Philadelphia say the Keeley Motor has finally been completed and a trial was held in front of stockholders and invited guests. No word indicates whether the motor succeeded or failed, and news suggests the world would be told if the trial had been largely successful.

Wn Wirt Sykes United States Consul to Cardiff dies recently. Known as Olive Logan’s husband, he was a quiet, retiring, painstaking journalist. In Washington he served as a correspondent for years and once edited the Ice Observer, a leading Democratic paper in Central New York.

The betrothal and related details trace back to Newport where the principals are reportedly staying.
At New Haven last Thursday Isaac HO Lockwood was sentenced to one year in State Prison for using the mails to defraud writers by promises to lend a tanker’s dead mate, claiming $780,000. He planned to obtain $100,000 and travel to Washington to sell fake diamonds to women at 10 percent of value, financing parties with sham jewelry.
In Kingston Tennessee a judge hurried a grand jury draw, selecting thirteen men from the courtroom. A child was to read names from a box but the panel was aborted and replaced. When names were later drawn from a jar, they matched the initial selection, a striking coincidence reported by local observers.
