The Eymeralda Herald declares its Num ber 3 strong and promising for the state. Bullion shipments arrive by train from Coy Virginia and California valued at over 108 thousand dollars. A box of 20 apple varieties from L P Whiting of Milford is gratefully received. The Fountain saloon opens to public acclaim. A Patent Office fire damages E J Cross Tire Escape, not mandatory to replace. Reno grows crowded as strangers arrive, freight surges, and northern stock arrives. The Reno Savings Bank and D A Bender Co close afternoons during the fair. A grand ball at Kimballs Hall hosted by Professor Frank's band. Verang Jovanxan subscription at 4 dollars yearly. County taxes due. Norton comments.
The Fourth Annual Pair of the Nevada State Agricultural Society opened amid ideal weather and rising attendance. Crowds increased on the track with double the passengers by rail and more vehicles present, while the grand stand appeared sparse. Early races were altered with two mile and balloted stakes adjusted. Madge Duke and Earnest excluded, Mary Tompkins participated but several entries were withdrawn. Rafael led early on but April lo forged the final victory in 1:48, with Soon er and Rafael contending in heats. officials noted changes in entries and the day’s results.
In the pavilion, a long list of exhibits features fine buggies from H. M. Bernard of Sacramento and Pike & Young, with two buggies shown by Cowes. Warehouses display wagon parts, Chis Miller presents canvas with change stitchwork, and Hoole & Co show self-made perfumery. W. ed. Marsh displays four New Era organs, Laycock shows battle scene and naval references, and an extensive display of worsted work shows lively enterprise. Racing notes include 2:60 purses and 2:27 events with strong bets. Mollie McCarthy is highlighted as a top horse trained by a Washington County owner. Pool sales at Depot Hotel continue, fair receipts rise, and weather and attendance praised. A Washington telegram confirms continued desert-land applications with proof. The new brick Wm Tell House opens tonight with TommicheI Brothers providing entertainment.
The event opened yesterday with a pigeon shooting contest at the Stata Fair. Virginia Shooting Club members like Charles Smith of Storkton and De. Oniver of Han Fpindgeo competed, along with numerous participants. Referee H D Parker and scorer H B Loomis presided as scores and prizes were tallied, including a $50 first prize to be shot off after prelims. The morning was clear and all participants started on time at 9 o'clock.
The Pavilion display expands rapidly as Charley Stoddard and helpers arrange items for a larger, richer exhibit. By tonight the layout will be in shape with many valuable articles already on view. Pizzascont, the United States minister to England, has tendered his resignation, reportedly at his own request.
The fair livestock section lists many entries across classes including mares, geldings, drafts, ringle geldings, roadsters, carriage horses, and Poultry. Notable exhibitors include AA Longley, Geo Alt, W E Bidleman, and J A Blossom with numerous 4 year olds and 3 year olds. A Pigeon Shooting Prize event opened with Nevada and California entrants, score tallies shared, and a 6 p.m. continuation planned with Prof. J. W. Acotte promoting a lively evening.
The Tuesday procession in Reno showcased a large list of horses cattle and draft animals headed by Bullet Box and followed by families and named breeders. A lengthy display included chests of mares, colts and workhorses with dozens of named owners and a planned public auction at the Fair Grounds on October lath in Reno.
Attendance remained high as the stock parade drew crowds and races stirred strong interest. Judges included C. C. Batterman and Jasper Babcock with Theo Winters substituting for Winters in the 2:27 race. Heat times featured Muggins and Sweetbrier in close contention and Stanford claiming the 2:27 heat after a late surge, with Dirigo and Sweetbrier close behind.
