Reno, located on the Truckee river in a basin surrounded by mountains, is a young but rapidly growing town. Founded in part to honor Gen. Reno, it serves Washoe County as the seat since 1871. Its population neared 2,000, with mining, farming, and railroad commerce driving expansion. The article notes fire resilience, rapid construction, irrigation potential, transportation links, and plans for a female seminary and prison nearby.
