Gravesend May 18 The Britannia and Ailsa raced for Royal Thames Yacht Club prizes starting Gravesend. The course repeated from yesterday about fifty miles to a buoy beyond the south end and back. Britannia led after passing south end and finished two minutes thirty seconds ahead of the Ailsa.
Jefferson City Mo May 18 Chairman Hall of the Democratic organization says a Silver Convention will be called with or without consent of the Democratic State Central Committee. Many view this as an initial step toward backing Senator West for president.
Grass Valley May 18 Peter King of King and Walford lumber dealers had his left arm mangled up to the shoulder in a mill accident at 11 30 this morning. The shock is severe and recovery doubtful. Near Bound Brook New Jersey a collision of coal and freight trains wrecked both trains. Engineer Buck killed, fireman Sanders badly burned, conductor severely cut and scalded.
Senator Gantinari of New Hampshire, on the Pacific Coast for health, has discussed potential nominees. He backs Reed but expects McKinley or Allison to secure the nomination, while Harrison is reportedly out. He seeks a Janus-faced candidate with a golden front toward the east and a silver one toward the west.
The Nora Republican in Ohio backs free coinage at a 16 to 1 ratio. The St. Louis Globe-Democrat, a strong gold advocate, praises Ohio Republican sentiment. Nevada Republicans show a similar stance with one differing point.
